Some people like to say, “I’m a self-made person. Everything I’ve got I’ve earned, I’ve achieved it for myself.” I say, and God says, “No you’re not; no, you didn’t.” Look at Deuteronomy chapter eight, verse 17: Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’

God says, make no mistake about it, if you gain any kind of material wealth in this life, it’s because I’ve allowed it. More than that. It’s because I’ve given you the means to gain that wealth. It’s because I’ve given you the gifts. It’s because I’ve given you the inheritance.

We only achieve anything, we only acquire anything through God’s express permission. Nothing can happen on this earth without his permission.

And yes, that gives us some challenges when it comes to the area of evil and suffering. And that’s not the focus of this verse, but it’s all explained by us sinning and rebelling against God. And we have to remember that God is sovereign over us. Yes, he’s given us free will, but God is God.

So no matter what we might achieve in this life, great or small, let us give thanks to God for it. Let us give thanks to God that he gave us everything that we have from our minds, to our bodies, to our situation in life. That all came from our Father God. And we should never arrogantly say in our hearts, “I did this all on my own.”

Lord God, our Father, we submit to you. Whatever comes to us in life as a gift, we thank you for that God. And we recognise that we can do nothing without you, without your strength in us, without your breath in our lungs. We owe everything to you God. Amen.
