The love that God is calling us to is pure and kind and life-giving and affirming. In the case of how we love God, it is worshipful and reverent.
And so if we want to have true life the way that God wants us to live, we have to take in this succinct summary of the law because it still holds true. God wants us to love him with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind.
He remains a jealous God who wants every part of us for himself. He has bought us through the blood of Jesus. We are His, and that’s a good thing for us. That’s the best possible thing that could have happened rather than him just discarding us or punishing us. And understanding how to love God in this way takes a lifetime.
And then the other command about love is to love our neighbours as ourselves. We are expected to look after ourselves and to look after everybody around us, the people with whom we come in contact.
