Today’s verse is for me, it lays me open and I come up short. I wonder how it is for you. Proverbs chapter 13, verse 10. By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.

The writer of this Proverb is saying there’s a stark contrast between those who are teachable and those who think they know best. And so many times in my life, I confess that I have not been teachable. I’ve wanted to work things out for myself. Somebody’s told me, don’t do it that way, do it this way. And my answer is, why? Why can’t I do it the way I want to? And even worse, sometimes I’ve said that to God: but God, surely this way’s better!

Now hang on a minute, he’s God and he knows everything. So I see a small problem with my approach to this. There is no benefit in saying to anyone, I know best. We should be open-minded and open-hearted and humble, and taking advice, particularly from those more experienced, further down the path than us, and especially from God himself.

Do you want to walk the way of wisdom? Wisdom is really knowing how to do life well. I do, but sometimes my flesh gets in the way. So let us sit under this Proverb and let it teach us and lead us into wisdom.

Lord God, I thank you for your word to us and how you direct and guide us. Please forgive us for those times of insolence, for those times when we say we know better, for those times when we refuse to listen and be taught. Thank you God, that you are a gentle and kind teacher. Please continue to teach us and lead us and fill us with your wisdom. Amen.
