This prophecy was written thousands of years ago to the Israelite nation, but it could have been written yesterday to us. Jeremiah chapter six, verse 16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.'”

How strongly that speaks of the stubbornness of heart of those who will not follow what God’s saying despite the fact it’s for their good. God’s saying to his people, as he says today, to us, to our nations, “This is the best way for you. Look at all that I’ve written in this book, this Manual for Life, and see how it can help you to live. See how it can help you to be in an effective relationship with your Creator.” But we say we will not do it.

And yet God’s voice still comes to us. It still says, look at these tried and tested and true methods. Look at this way of living. Look at this way of understanding life, of relating to God and see how much good it will do you to follow my way and to glorify me.

And note really importantly in this passage, what God promises to us: rest for our souls. There remains a Sabbath rest in Jesus Christ, this true soul rest where we find contentment, despite any circumstances happening in life, good or bad. Rest for our souls is offered to us by our God.

And for so many people, that’s what they’re longing for, for rest, for cessation of the trials and tribulations, and for peace. We need to find God’s way and walk in it and help others to do so too.

Thank you, our Father, that you have shown us these ancient paths. The good way to walk in. Thank you that you promise rest for our souls. Let us together say we will walk in these ways. Amen.
