Let’s meditate today on the different outcomes for those who are righteous and wise and those who are unrighteous and foolish. Proverbs chapter 10, verse 21. The lips of the righteous feed many but fools die, for lack of sense.
This is an observation made by the writer of this Proverb. When he sees righteousness and wisdom and noble living at work in people, he notes that this results in good being done, many being fed. With righteousness and wisdom comes a really good productiveness.
If we are acting and operating and living in a righteous manner, then we can expect the outcome will be that good is done in our lives, in our communities, and in our world. And in that sense, the things that we are given by God, the resources that he gives us, they are multiplied.
But the counterpoint of this is what happens to those who are morally bankrupt who are foolish: they die. Their lack of sense kills them. And in some cases that will be physical and in other cases it’s moral degradation leads to destruction, chaos in their own lives and around them.
I know which side of these scales I would rather be on. So then this Proverb gives us good reason to pursue righteousness and wisdom, and to shun foolishness and unrighteousness.
Lord God, we need your help with this. Please make us wise. Please make us righteous. Please work through us, increase our ability to work for you. And Lord, please help us to rescue others from foolishness, from unrighteousness so that many will be spared and many will be fed. Amen.
