It doesn’t do to live in the past, but it also doesn’t do to forget the past completely. And so we arrive at some advice from the Psalmist Asaph in Psalm 77, verse 11. I will remember the deeds of the Lord. Yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
In this Psalm, Asaph is celebrating God. He’s celebrating who he is and what he’s done for us. He’s celebrating God’s track record for him and for the nation of Israel.
This is a good thing for us to do internally in our hearts, and it’s a good thing for us to do when we gather together: To remind each other of all the things that God has done. And we don’t need to confine ourselves to the things that he’s done in scripture. We can also talk about the things that he’s done for us in our lives.
I think back to my own conversion. I was very young, but I changed dramatically when God converted me. I changed from this rebellious, highly willful child into somebody that was seeking Jesus and was becoming more compliant.
That doesn’t mean that everything was all sunshine and rainbows from that point onwards by the way. Ask my parents if you want to know! Challenges continued, but still God did something in my life from that point on, and repeatedly did things in my life. I’ve witnessed miracles of healing and transformation.
And if we remember those things there are two outcomes. One is that it increases our faith because we are saying, yes, I remember what God’s done, and that’s great, but also it increases our gratitude. It increases our reverence for God. This is a mighty God. This is a powerful God. This is a kind and loving God who stoops down to our lowly position and intervenes and makes things better for us.
So we can remember the things that have happened in our lives and the lives of other people. And we can also look back at scripture and see the deliverance that God has wrought all throughout history. Let us consider those wonders of old and let us give him his due as our Lord, our Saviour, our King, our Father, our friend, our miracle working God.
