Why is it important for us to fear God? What does that even mean and why is it important for us to trust in his faithfulness? This is what we consider as we meditate on Psalm 147 verse 11. But the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him; in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Now, one of the principles that can be hard for us to accept, whether as Christians or non-Christians, is that God’s glory is one of the most important things in this universe. Because God is so in himself beautiful, glorious, to be commended, it is right and proper, that he is glorified.
And he is glorified in us fearing him, but not terror fear. The kind of fear that we show God is reverence fear. We hold him in awe because we are blown away by all he has done and by who he is.
And it pleases the Lord when we treat him in this way, which is appropriate to who he is. He wants us to be in right relationship with him. We can approach him as Father and friend, but he is still our God and our king. And it is right for us to hold him in awe.
He also takes delight in us delighting in his steadfast love. He takes delight when we say, God, we trust you and we know that you love us unreservedly. He has proven that to us through what he did, through his son Jesus taking on the burden of all sin so that we could be in relationship with God.
He has shown love to countless generations, and when we accept this truth and look to him as our amazing mighty God who loves us, this pleases him. And it is a good thing to please our heavenly Father.
Lord God, we recognise that you are worthy of all honour. You are glorious. And you have loved us eternally. We praise you for this. We thank you for this, and we place our hope and our trust entirely in you. Amen.
