Today we’re meditating on something that I’m praying for you, that as you watch this, this will be true of you. It’s Philippians chapter one, verse nine. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment.
Let’s meditate on this for a bit. This is a good prayer from an apostle to his churches. It’s a good prayer for us about each other, that our love will increase. We’re talking particularly here about agape love, the unconditional pursuing love that Jesus had for us.
And with that love comes knowledge and discernment. So we don’t operate foolishly in relation to those that we love. Love is not foolish, not this kind of love. As we grow in the knowledge of God and of his purposes, and as we receive from him his wisdom, this will give us the necessary tools to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
So in our love, we embrace those in our community and in our churches. And with knowledge and discernment, we ensure that the wicked one will be thwarted.
God asks us to love all the people that he loves. That’s everyone. But he doesn’t ask us to surrender everything to all those people. This is why you see in the epistles, in particular, recommendations in relation to those that will attack the flock. Believers in persistent sin that are unrepentant would be excluded, and that was an operation of love.
So as we grow in knowledge, as we learn more about God as we read his word, we will then be able to extend love in a way that is effective and powerful for the kingdom of God. So let this be our prayer for each other, that our love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment.
