When Jesus talks about us being the salt of the earth, what does he mean? What does it mean for us? Let’s consider that as we meditate on Matthew chapter five, verse 13. You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
Now presumably, those of us who are listening to Jesus’s words don’t want to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. We want to be this salty flavour, this concept that is useful to our society and useful to the purposes of God.
How then do we retain our saltiness? What is even salt?
It is a preservative. It is something that maintains flavour and taste. And by analogy, we are going out into the world maintaining good taste, morality, preserving the principles and truths of God. And if we stop doing that, we are no longer salty.
How do we remain distinctive in our society? We have to resist compromising and going along with popular opinions. We have to resist being pushed into a corner where our views are disregarded or silenced. Some Christian principles and views are not popular today, especially in Western society. That doesn’t mean that we let go of those views. No. We must remain true to God’s word and true to our Saviour Jesus.
Lord God, please help us to retain that saltiness so that our mission into this world is not damaged. Please help us not to be inactive. Please give us the boldness that we need to speak out, but also the grace that we need to treat people with compassion and with the love that you have shown to us. Amen.
