As Christians, we like to talk often about how we no longer live under the law. Does that mean that we are free from all laws and we can do whatever we want? Well, not quite. Romans chapter eight, verse two, Paul says: For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
So the old law, sin and death, that is us doing wrong and then dying for it, we are set free from that. But that’s freed into a better law, which is the law of the Spirit of life.
And what is that law? That is the law that legally makes us free, that legally deals with the penalty for our sins by virtue of what Jesus has done
And beyond that, that law is the law that causes the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit of God to live within us, to start transforming us, to do his work, to grow his Fruit. This is the law of the Spirit of life. And that law, if you have accepted Jesus, that law is at work in you, my friends.
And it is this powerful law that gives us freedom. It’s this powerful law that enables us to walk in Jesus’ footsteps day by day. It’s this powerful law that makes us more like our Lord and master Jesus Christ. And that’s the kind of law that we want to live under, isn’t it? The law of the Spirit of life.
I thank you, God, that you haven’t freed us into complete lawlessness. You have freed us into the new law, the new relationship, the new covenant with you, God, where we are just accepted as we are because you see us as we are redeemed by your Son. I ask you please then to help us to walk within this law, keeping in step with your Spirit as you guide and direct us and transform us day by day. Amen.
