In our penultimate meditation in this series on the characteristics of God, today we meditate on one of my favourite characteristics, which is God’s compassion. Psalm 116 verse five. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous. Our God is merciful.
And so there seems to be a contradiction in the fact that God is righteous, which means all evil doing must be punished and dealt with. But he’s also gracious and merciful, which means that some evil doing and sin doesn’t result in punishment for the perpetrator.
This is graciousness and compassion in its fullest expression. We know that what Jesus did for us fully pays for our sin so that we can at the end of time, look God in the eye on the day of judgment and say, yes, I sinned, yes, I fell so far short of your standards, but I claim the blood of Christ and I am forgiven.
And God’s compassion goes beyond that. He has provided for us a home to live in on this amazing planet He created. In this mind-blowingly wonderful universe, which is spoiled only by our wrongdoing.
And in his providence He gives us everything that we need. Not everything that we want, but everything that he knows that we need for our good and for his glory, so that through our experiences in this world, which are sometimes painful, we have the discipline of God that leads us into deeper relationship and closer conformity to the character of Jesus.
If we let him shape us, we will become more like our perfect Saviour. This is another expression of God’s compassion to us, that we lowly pitiful creatures can be made more holy, more righteous, more acceptable to the God who loves us.
Thank you God, for your eternal, abundant compassion without which we would be hopelessly lost. You are merciful God, and all we can do is thank you in worship for your compassion towards us. Amen.
