Is it possible for us to know the mind of God? Let’s meditate on that today as we look at Isaiah chapter 55, verse eight. But my thoughts are not your thoughts. Neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord.
This is huge, isn’t it? God is infinite. His mind clearly has to be vast compared to ours. None of us can bring things into existence just by saying a few words. So clearly there’s a big difference between all of us and him.
And there’s even more to this verse, isn’t there? Not only are God’s thoughts and ways so far beyond us. They’re also purer than our thoughts and ways. They also have better motivation and character. In his thoughts, in his ways we see the way to life, a way that we don’t innately follow because we are prone to sin.
So in starting to understand God’s thoughts and his ways particularly reflected in the words of scripture, we can start to understand how we should behave and act. This is not to bring us into legalism or bondage. This is so that we as loving, obedient children can do what our father would like us to do.
We want to please him. We are not in bondage. We are not constrained by the law. We simply want to be dutiful children. And as dutiful children that love our Father, we try and understand what it is that he’s thinking.
We can grasp that a little. We’ll never understand the full picture, but maybe we can grasp a little. Let us continue to meditate on his word and increasingly understand who he is and what he wants of us.
