This life of ours can be really hard, can’t it? And that’s why I think we need so much of the comfort that we find in the Bible. Like today’s verse, Psalm 94, verse 19: When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

And as we meditate on this verse, we ask ourselves what is it that the Psalmist is talking about? So we know the first bit. When the cares of my heart are many. There are so many things in this world, in this life that can grind us down, leave us exhausted, sadden us, exhaust us, leave us traumatised. So many cares, we’ve got that bit.

But what about the consolations that cheer our souls? What are these consolations that the Psalmist is thinking about?

I think that we see in the Bible many things that God says to us that are intended for our comfort and even for our joy, our happiness, our pleasure. Consolations like I will always be with you.

You know, when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God is with us. In the worst possible circumstances, he is right with us. That is comforting, that is consoling.

And there are other consolations, like God made this vast, beautiful, incredible universe for his pleasure, and also for ours. We’re made in his image so we can take pleasure in the things that delight him. When he made nature, he saw what he’d made and he said it’s good.

Now, admittedly, we see a fallen world now, but still when you look out in nature, isn’t there so much that’s wonderful and cheering? When you look up to the stars, doesn’t your soul burst?

God consolations are intended to cheer our souls. So when the cares of our hearts are many, we should pause, stop, look back at the Bible, look back at the world that God has created, and look to our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and remember that his consolations can and do cheer our souls.
