We need to be careful how we talk, don’t we? We are warned about this in today’s meditation. Proverbs chapter 18 verse 21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Now, possibly journalists and politicians understand the power of the tongue better than almost anyone. And we can see the impact of words as what is said, plays out in policy, in decision making, in wars, in negotiations for peace. Our tongues are powerful.
And so if we love to talk, we need to be particularly careful, don’t we, in what we say. Because where we sow words, we are going to reap the fruit of those words. If we are sowing peace, we can expect to reap peace. If we are sowing discord, envy, jealousy, anger, discrimination, we can expect to reap the fruits of those negative consequences.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Are we speaking death or are we speaking life? Do the people around us view us as people who bring life, who bring words of life wherever we go? Are we encouraging? Are we hospitable? Do we express kindness to all those around us?
Or are we critical? Are we belittling? Are we rude?
We don’t need to be wimps as Christians do we? But we should be gracious. Our Lord Jesus when he walked this earth was gracious to those around him. He could be stern, but he was loving and caring and considerate, and we should be too.
Let us be people who do not talk carelessly. Let us be people who are championing the causes of the gospel, shown in how we speak and in how we live our lives.
Lord God, I ask for your help so that we can keep a rein on our tongues, so that we do not do damage with what we say, and rather, we are spreading the peace of the gospel wherever we go. Amen.
