As we continue meditating on the character of God, we’re looking today at a verse that’s often quoted when we’re thinking about how much God cares for us. Matthew 10, verse 29. Jesus is speaking: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny and not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father?”

This verse speaks of the great attentiveness of the creator of this universe. He knows everything that’s happening inside his universe. And from many places in scripture, we see that that includes our very thoughts, our attitudes of mind. God knows the heart.

And not only does God know, he’s concerned for us. He’s concerned with our welfare. God is seeking to bring us into a stable, loving relationship with him.

And so Jesus points out that even though sparrows are so plentiful and of no particular value, God takes notice of everything that happens to these, the smallest and lowliest of creatures. So how much more my friend, does he care about what’s happening to you? Even though sometimes it may not seem like it, he does care. He knows. He’s with you at all times. He walks through every trial with you.

Sparrows are of great consequence to our loving God. You my friend, are of even greater consequence. He did not send Jesus to die for sparrows. He sent Jesus to die for me and for you. And he pays attention to us and he loves us.

Thank you, God, for your vast, boundless, unending love for us. Thank you that you take great care of us, that you lead us on into glory, into salvation and into a permanent relationship with you our God. Amen.
