In our continuing miniseries, meditating on the character of God, today we’re thinking about his moral character, his justice. Look at Psalm 119 verse 160. The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

Now this verse takes some thinking about. What does it mean for every one of God’s righteous rules to endure forever?

Does that mean that all of the law in the Old Testament endures forever, including the rules that we no longer need to keep? Yes, it does in the sense that the morality that’s enshrined in those laws is eternal and unchanging.

We continue to break the moral law of God, but we are saved from the consequences of that, the eternal consequences by the sacrifice of Jesus. So there’s no need for ongoing sacrifices, which the old covenant demanded, but that’s not because the sacrifices are no longer needed. No, it’s because one supreme sacrifice was made that satisfied that legal requirement. So God’s rules are enduring, but they are fulfilled in Christ taking the burden of fulfilling the law away from us.

And this Psalm also says that all of his word is true. You can look at every part of the Bible from beginning to end and see the truth of God shining through. Sometimes that’s really hard for us to understand and accept, but nevertheless, it is truth. And every single accusation that has been brought against the word of God has an answer.

But for me, it is more important that we find The Answer in a personal relationship with Jesus. And everything that he said was also true.

Thank you, God for your truth, for your moral character, and that we can rely on you. You will never fail us. You will never forsake us. You will always be true to yourself and your justice will reign eternally. Amen.
