In two minute meditation number 500, we’re going to reflect on one of my favourite things about God. That is his integrity. This is part of our series, meditating on God’s character.
Numbers chapter 23 verse 19. God is not man that he should lie or son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said and will he not do it or has he spoken and will he not fulfil it?
If we look at how God is revealed to us throughout the Bible, we may think that he changes, but he doesn’t. His character is completely consistent. He is fully just from first to last and fully merciful from first to last.
Sometimes people think that God has encouraged the Israelites to be war mongering in the Old Testament. But no, God in his commitment to righteousness is purging the unrighteousness from the land into which the Israelites are moving. He also provides in his mercy a way for us to be loved and forgiven despite our own shortcomings.
He shows how much he loves us by, of course, sending Jesus to die in our place so we don’t have to. His loving kindness is shown right from the first pen stroke in Genesis until Revelation. In Genesis, he makes a creation, a planet fit for us to inhabit. And in Revelation, he makes heaven fit for us to inhabit with him.
What he says he’s going to do, he’s going to do. Every word that comes from his mouth is true. And we are talking about real truth, not what’s true for him, not postmodern truth. No, God is absolutely true. Absolutely honest. Absolutely consistent with his own character.
We don’t have some kind of capricious God who’s going to change his mind, from one day to the next so that we never know where we stand with him.
No, we know that having accepted Jesus Christ, we stand clean and forgiven and will enter into glory to be with him in the next life. That is a hundred percent guaranteed because God guarantees it himself and he will not lie.
