If ever there was a Bible verse that was going to create controversy in today’s climate, this is it. Genesis chapter one, verse 27. So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.
This is a beautiful verse. It’s an expression of God’s creativity, the pinnacle of his creation as he makes men and women in his image. And later at the end of this chapter, Genesis one, God says, of everything that he’s made, it’s very good.
So God is satisfied with this aspect of creation. There’s something of value that he sees in the maleness and femaleness of his creatures. This is a subject that for many is very confused and polarising. What does it mean to be male and female in the mind of God?
Because there is such confusion and debate and contention on this issue, it really benefits us to meditate on this verse, to lean into it, to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us the mind and intention of God without any prejudices or preconceived ideas that we may be holding onto.
The word of God is we know truth. And it reveals to us much about God and how he views us and this world that he’s created. In a two minute meditation, we cannot exhaustively examine this subject, but we can certainly reflect on the verse, reflect on what God’s telling us and accept that God has made male and female and said that this is good. Not only is this good, it reflects something of the image of God.
Please reflect on this prayerfully, please ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and by all means, please make kind comments and tell me what God is saying to you through this verse.
Lord God, I thank you that you made creation, that you made us, that you made us male and female, and that you saw that this was good. In a confused, chaotic, and fighting world, please help us to hang on to these truths, looking to you and seeking your will in our lives. Amen.
