Today we’re kicking off a miniseries on the character of God. It is good to meditate on the character of God. And today we are meditating on one of God’s foremost characteristics in one John chapter four, verse eight. Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love.
This follows on quite neatly from the two minute meditation that just went live a couple of days ago where the whole law of God is summed up in loving God and loving people. And now knowing that God is love, we can see that this universe reflects God completely because he has infused it with love throughout, including in us, making us capable of love.
And so in knowing love ourselves, in knowing true love, we get a glimpse of God. That is how we can know God, in part, through the ability he has given us to love, and through the love that he has showed to us in particular through the death of his son, Jesus Christ.
We can’t really know God without knowing that act of love that brought us back to God into relationship with him. The supreme act of love was Jesus dying on the cross for us. And so if we don’t know love, if we don’t know the person who embodied love on this planet, then how can we possibly know God?
God is love. That’s not all he is, but he is supremely loving.
Thank you, God, that you allow us to live in a universe where a primary characteristic is love. We thank you, God, that you are loving towards us. We thank you that you sent your son Jesus as the highest possible act of love that there could be. And we ask you, God, to make us more loving and more ready to spread that love around. Amen.
