Jesus asked a learned Jew to sum up the law very succinctly. And he amazingly did it in this response that we find in Luke chapter 10, verse 27. And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.”
Jesus then commends him for this reply. The law, the law of God is all about love. It’s about how we love God and how we love each other. And this is why we consider love to be so critically important as Christians. The love that God is calling us to is pure and kind and life-giving and affirming. In the case of how we love God, it is worshipful and reverent.
And so if we want to have true life the way that God wants us to live, we have to take in this succinct summary of the law because it still holds true. God wants us to love him with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind.
He remains a jealous God who wants every part of us for himself. He has bought us through the blood of Jesus. We are His, and that’s a good thing for us. That’s the best possible thing that could have happened rather than him just discarding us or punishing us. And understanding how to love God in this way takes a lifetime.
And then the other command about love is to love our neighbours as ourselves. We are expected to look after ourselves and to look after everybody around us, the people with whom we come in contact. Now, of course, we can’t personally look after every single person on the planet, but we collectively as Christians have this as our mission. We are to spread the message of love and peace between God and humans to all mankind.
This is extremely challenging, isn’t it? How can we do this? Only with the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. Empowered by God let us commit ourselves to loving him completely and loving our neighbours truly.
