Imagine you are standing before God on the day of judgment. How do you feel? Not very confident? Overconfident? Let’s look at how we can achieve exactly the right level of confidence by meditating on one John chapter four, verse 17. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment because as he is, so also, are we in the world.
John has just been talking about how we are abiding in Christ and Christ is abiding in us. And how we are confessing him with our mouths. By this, love is perfected in us and with us by the confession of our faith, but also by the fact that Jesus is living in us.
This is something over which we don’t have a lot of control. We can’t make God do his work any quicker than he will do it. This should give us some relief. We don’t have to work at being perfected in the way that this verse describes. That’s God’s job.
But as this work is completed in us, we are given the confidence that we need so that we can face God in the judgment and know that we’re safe. And we take that confidence into the world knowing that the world can’t harm us in any way that matters, but also knowing that they too, everyone we meet in the world will face that day of judgment.
And so we continue to take our testimony into the world doing so with the quality that John always insists on. Love, compassion for the lost, kindness towards those who are reaching out to God, kindness towards those who have no clue of the state of their souls. By this is love perfected in us and we gain confidence so that we stand clear and clean before God when that day of judgment comes.
This is definitely the kind of confidence we want, isn’t it?
