I only said to my wife yesterday, I feel like I need to get off this treadmill for a bit. Just meaning life in general. Well, today’s verse is definitely for me, and it’s probably for you too. More words from Jesus in Matthew chapter 11, verse 28. Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Can we see the attention of Jesus Christ to us in this? He knows that we labour. He knows that sometimes we are going to experience heavy burdens, burdens that feel too heavy for us to carry.
And what does he say? Oh, keep going. You’ve got this. You are strong. I believe in you.
No, he doesn’t say that. He says, come to me. I’m going to give you rest.
He is the Lord of the Sabbath. He is our Sabbath rest. In him we can lay down our burdens. In him he empowers us to pick them up when we need to and carry them in his strength.
And this message from Jesus, it’s for all of us. He says, come to me all who labour and are heavy laden. That’s you, my friend when you are feeling that. He wants you to come to him and find rest in him.
He wants me to do that too. And so I guess I’m challenged by the word of God as I often am. When I feel like getting off the treadmill is that a sign to me that I haven’t been saying to Jesus please give me your rest. I lay my burdens down and I worship you.
Thank you, Lord God, you care for us so much. You want us to have rest. You want us to have glorious rest. You have compassion for us. You see our burdens. Your heart goes out to us. Thank you for caring so much, and thank you that we find our rest in you. Amen.
