Today we’re gonna focus on the "end of all things" without giving way to hysteria or despair. Let’s meditate on one Peter, chapter four, verse seven. The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
Peter has this "end times" mindset that Jesus’ kingdom has been and is being ushered in. We are now living in what we might refer to as "the last days", the days in which Jesus is King.
Jesus’ sacrifice has secured for us salvation. This is the reality in which we live, because all of this is at hand, because the sacrifice of the cross is available for us right now, because the increase of God’s kingdom is happening right now as more and more people turn to Jesus. We should therefore be self controlled and sober minded. We see God’s kingdom advancing and that completely changes our priorities, doesn’t it?
There’s no point us committing ourselves to accumulating lots of friends, to accumulating wealth, to being the best at anything if it’s not something God’s asking of us.
Because we are heading towards the ultimate consummation when Jesus returns for his bride, the Church. And when God’s rule and reign is extended everywhere permanently for all time. Doesn’t that put everything else that’s going on in life into perspective?
Lord God, please help us to remain self-controlled and sober-minded as we think of all that Jesus has done, all that he has achieved, and all that, his work at the cross is still achieving. May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth today and in greater and greater measure. We look forward to the return of Jesus Christ, our Messiah, when God, you are fully revealed to all creation and we will see you face to face. Amen.
