Can I be honest with you? I don’t really like it when meditations or worship songs feel self-indulgent. But there’s a lot of stuff in the Bible about how much God loves me and loves you, and we should focus on it if it’s actually there in the text!

So today we meditate on some words of Jesus from Matthew chapter 18 verse 12. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the 99 on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?

What a compassionate, encouraging statement this is from Jesus. This tells us something about the love of God that when we are faithless to him, he remains faithful. And he’s not just faithful, he pursues us.

You know, Israel was pursued by God despite the fact that they broke faith with God so many times. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, we see the father figure running after the Prodigal Son as he returns home.

This is the kind of undignified metaphor we wouldn’t normally associate with a Holy God. And yet, this shows us how he feels about me how he feels about you, my friend.

If in any way we feel like we have gone astray, we’ve turned away from God he will do his level best to bring us back. And his level best is pretty good.

Of course those of us who persistently reject God, who have never been saved will find that God in the end rejects us too. But after He has made every attempt a gracious God can make to win us over. God is a loving pursuing God and he wants us in his Kingdom.

And we can apply this to ourselves, but we can also apply this to people that we know. When we think maybe there’s no hope for that person, that friend, that colleague, that family member, just remember God is in pursuit of those whom he loves and those whom he calls his own.
