How do we know that Jesus is in us and we are in him? We have an answer from the Apostle John today. It’s one John chapter four, verse 13. By this, we know that we abide in him and he and us because he has given us of his Spirit.

Now I have quite a Charismatic background in my faith , and in Charismatic Christianity, there’s a big emphasis on the Gifts of the Spirit. You know, tongues and prophecy and words of knowledge and all of that. But I think that John has something more than that in mind when he talks about the way that Jesus has imparted his Spirit, the Holy Spirit to us.

And that is that we are transformed at the point of conversion, but this is the start of an ongoing transformation process that we should see evidence of throughout our spiritual lives. Sometimes we look at ourselves and we say, I’m not very like Jesus at all. But even that can be evidence that we’ve become more aware of the way in which we’re different and how we need to grow and that turns us to prayer, to ask God to continue his work.

So the Spirit within us starts to grow his Fruit. You know, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, all of that is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It’s part of the evidence that he’s living in us and that we partake of the Spirit of God.

So if you’re looking for some kind of guarantee this is it. The Holy Spirit in us at the point of conversion and onwards. By the Spirit given to us, we know that Jesus is abiding in us and we are abiding in him.

Thank you Lord God, for giving us your Holy Spirit as the means through which we continue to be transformed and conformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ. This is so essential for us in our day-to-day life as we endeavour to serve you and become ever more obedient and loving children. Amen.
