Lord, please don’t give me poverty or riches. Now, how often do we say that we don’t want either of those? Because the wise man knows that riches can be as much of a snare as poverty can.
Feed me with the food that is needful for me. Give me the food that I need, God. Not that I want, not that my greed is longing for. The food that I need. How often are we able to restrain ourselves to the food that we need, particularly if we have more than we need?
This is a very wise prayer, isn’t it? Take away lying and falsehood. Please keep me in a healthy middle ground between being poor and being rich. And please ensure that I am filled with the things that are needful for me, that are good for me, that you, my God, would set before me if you were preparing me a meal.
