Do you feel at peace? If not, are you wondering, are you ever going to feel at peace again? Well, let’s look at Isaiah chapter 26, verse 3. You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.
A lack of peace in our minds and in our hearts so often comes from dwelling on things that are uncertain or threatening or stressful. How do we avoid that stress? How do we find our peace in the face of a storm? Isaiah says, we have to make sure that we are thinking first and foremost of the things of God.
You know, when Peter stepped out of the boat to walk on the water towards his Saviour, he was doing fine as long as he looked at Jesus. It was when he looked at the waves, it was when he looked at the ridiculousness of the situation and thought, "This isn’t possible, how can I be standing on water?" that he sank.
Had he kept looking to his Saviour, had he kept his mind stayed on Christ, he would have remained in that inexplicable, peaceful situation where he could walk all the way to Jesus across liquid. And this is a principle that we see throughout scripture, that we have to keep our focus on God, if we want to have any chance of making it through this life.
And I know, particularly with the things that have happened to me and my family over the last year or so, that peace can be elusive, even when we’re praying, even when we’re calling out to God. And all I can say is, the answer to that is not to stop praying, but to pray more. It’s not to give up on God, but to rely on Him with every fibre of our beings.
The peace of God will descend on us as we keep our minds on Him. That is because, says Isaiah, we are showing that we trust in God. Do you trust in God, my friend? This is a question we must ask ourselves. If we do, perfect peace is one outcome. May your mind and your heart be settled as you focus on Him and put your trust in Him for every area of your life.
