Proverbs 18, verse 10 says: The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous man runs into it and is safe.
The name of the Lord, whatever it is that we use to call on God, that is our refuge for us, the name by which we refer to God. We might say Yahweh, which is about the best pronunciation I can manage of an old, ancient Hebrew word.
Yahweh, that name for us is a strong tower, which means that we are calling on God and relying on God by name. He is the one who makes us safe.
And this discipline of calling on God and running towards Him is associated with righteousness. The writer of Proverbs is strongly commending for us, calling on God, appropriately, reverently and turning our attention towards Him. Looking to Him for our guidance, looking to Him for our strength, our comfort, looking to Him for wisdom, looking for Him to direct our steps.
And in all these ways, calling on the name of the Lord, leaning on Him, running towards Him, we are made safe. Not necessarily safe from the evils and the harms that can befall us in this fallen world, but safe in the spiritual sense, safe in the sense of eternity, safe in the sense that we are aligning ourselves with the plans of God. Which is exactly what He wants for us and of us.
My friends let us call on the name of God. Let us call on Yahweh. Let us call on the Holy Spirit. Let us call on Jesus Christ and place ourselves in their care and at their disposal.
Lord God, we magnify your name, Yahweh, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit. You are the one to whom we look for all things in our life. Thank you that you make us safe. Thank you that you make us secure in your name and in your presence.
Amen.
