When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
The Psalmist here has just got this vision of absolute grandeur out in the sky above him. And Looking at all that God has put, this vast expanse of the heavens, he then asks, of what significance am I in that context? God’s made all of this amazing creation, this universe that he’s given us to live in. How can he possibly think of little us in the midst of all of this grandeur?
And of course if you know the Psalm you know that he goes on to say, and yet you have put mankind in this great position of honour. This is what God has done for us. God has created this vast universe so finely tuned to the needs of life, because he wanted to create us. That was his intention all along. And he wants to be in relationship with us.
