What does it mean to live in the light? Let’s ponder something that Jesus says in John chapter 3 verse 21. "But whoever does what is true comes to the light so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
Now we know from other things that we see in scripture that we are not to be people who are boasting about the good things that we’ve done. We’re not doing things to earn praise from people, so that’s not what it means to come to the light.
I think most likely it means that we are not hiding what we’re doing with the objective that people won’t see it in case we get into trouble. We are not covering up evil works. In fact, we’re letting everything that we do be seen so that there is transparency in our deeds, so that we are accountable for what we’ve done, so that people around us can see how we’re behaving.
And in this way, if it’s known that we’re Christians, that we’re followers of Jesus, and we are behaving in a way that glorifies Him, this is a good witness. This speaks of the difference that the Gospel makes in our lives, that the Holy Spirit is living through us, transforming us, bearing His fruit in us.
And naturally, if we are not engaged in deceptive practices, if we are not walking in darkness, hiding what we’re doing, people will see this. Not everybody will like it. But it’s important for God to be glorified, and He can be glorified in what we do, in the light, with transparency.
There’s a real challenge to us here. We wouldn’t necessarily want everything that we do, or say, or think, to be exposed publicly. And I’m not saying that we should do that. I’m not saying we should overshare. But there should be nothing in what we do, or say, or think, that should cause us embarrassment, or bring the gospel into disrepute.
Holy Spirit, thank you that you live and work in us and are growing your fruit. Please help us then to live in the light so that all the things that we do are done with transparency and give glory to God. Amen.
