In Ephesians 6, Paul reminds us that we’re in a battle. We don’t go out to battle without putting our armor on. So in Ephesians 6:14, he says, Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.
So first, truth. Truth holds everything together. Without truth, we could know nothing of our salvation, we could know nothing of God, we could know nothing of the universe.
Our knowledge of anything is predicated on the idea that we can know that things are true. And God is a God of truth. So the gospel is true, and we hold all our armor together, with this belt of truth.
Taking on next, the breastplate of righteousness. And of course it is the righteousness of Christ, not our own righteousness. That’s not righteousness at all.
Christ’s death confers on us righteousness, right standing. We are legally discharged of all penalties in relation to sin before God. And that breastplate protects us from incoming fire. It makes sure our chests are safe so that we continue breathing in the breath, the breath of God that he puts in our lungs and so that we are able to stand firm.
So note that like the first parts of our armor are fundamental to how we can proceed as Christians. We are on the side of truth, agreeing with God, and we are covered by his righteousness. And because of that, the enemy, the world, our flesh, and the devil cannot dislodge us from our sure position as the Saved in Christ. And so Paul tells us to stand on that basis.
My friends, are you going into battle, the battle that God asks of you, with your armor on? Are you taking hold of truth? And are you saved? Are you covered by the righteousness of Christ?
