Uh oh, the Apostle Peter is nailing us down today. 1 Peter 1, verses 15 to 16. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."

Now Peter there is quoting out of Leviticus, something in the Old Testament, which I kind of wish had stayed there, and we didn’t need to worry about it anymore. No, he’s brought it right into the New Covenant, stating that this requirement for us to be holy endures beyond the Cross.

He says we should be holy in all our conduct. My friend, are you holy in all your conduct? I certainly am not. So how do we achieve this?

Time and time again, we have to raise our hands to heaven and say, God, please help me, because I can’t help myself. Please continue to grow your Fruit in me. Please continue to transform me. Please continue to cleanse and sanctify me. Please continue to model me after your Son.

Because the only way, friends that we can be holy as if God makes us holy. And although the cleansing and the washing of the blood of Christ makes us righteous, does it make us holy in all our conduct?

Well, no, because we have ongoing decisions day-to-day and Christians can be guilty of unholy conduct just as much as non Christians. I’m sure you know this to be true.

So we really kind of have to take this on the chin and say, Okay, Peter, you got me and now we’re going to turn our face to heaven and ask for help. Because there is no point trying to do this on our own.

There’s also no reason to come into condemnation when we fail because our guilt has been paid for. And yet still, he’s a holy God and so we should be holy too. That is what he asks of us.

Lord God, this is a tall order, but I know that you give us the resources so that we can day by day become more like Jesus and become holier in our thoughts and in our actions. Thank you for your forgiveness when we fail. And thank you, Lord, that you make us worthy to be your children. Amen.
