Continuing with the armour of God, from Ephesians chapter 6, we’re now in verse 16. In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.
I wonder, do we consider our faith to be protection? Protection from our enemy? Is it protection against anything at all?
Well in the matter of spiritual warfare, yes, it is protection. The fact that we have faith in Jesus Christ, this is something that our enemy, the devil, and our enemy, the flesh, cannot stand, but also cannot penetrate. When those fiery darts, whatever they may be, words of discouragement, attacks on your credibility, the inner workings of sin, when they come against us, we just need to dig deep into our faith.
We can do this by saying, no, I’m a child of God. I’m a brother of Christ. His blood covers me, and this attack shall not pass. These spiritual and sinful attacks that come against us are extinguished completely by the shield of faith.
And so clearly it’s something we must bring with us at all times. Are you living by faith in all that you do in life? Am I?
No matter what circumstance we’re in, no matter what context, no matter who we’re with, are we bringing our faith with us to protect us? Because our faith in Christ, our belief in the Gospel, our understanding of his word and what God expects of us, very practically helps us to remain on God’s path. It helps us to defend against these attacks.
So we need to realize that attacks are coming. Paul is saying, take this shield of faith, not because it’s something nice or pretty to carry around with us. He’s saying it because we are going to come under attack. But he’s also saying you are equipped when that attack comes. What you need is your faith. Your belief in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will protect you.
