Today we’re meditating on some very clear words from the Apostle John, in 1 John 5 verse 12. Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
This is a very easy statement to process, isn’t it? If you have Jesus, you have life. If you don’t have Jesus, you don’t have life.
So what does it mean to have the Son of God? What does it mean to have Jesus?
Many people watching this may be renting property. And in the sense that you’re renting the property, you don’t really have it, do you? You can’t keep it. It’s not yours. You have temporary use of it.
And in a similar way, if we don’t have Jesus, that’s all we’ve got with our life. We have temporary use of it, it’s not our own. And John’s saying that when you have Jesus, this becomes a permanent thing. You will have your life forever, for eternity.
But I think he also means that in the here and now, you have life in a different way, in a categorically different way to those who don’t have Jesus. When Jesus is in your life, your purpose changes. Your character is developed in accordance with God’s principles and purposes. The Holy Spirit is growing his Fruit in you.
Is there a sense in which we can have more life, more of Jesus? Of course there is. His resources are never ending. They are inexhaustible. And as we ask Him for more life, for more of Himself, He will give freely and generously to us.
The question, though, that we should ask ourselves is whether this life is just for us, or is it for those around us? There’s enough of God’s life. There’s enough of Jesus’s life to go around for everyone. So let us do what we can to ensure that there are fewer and fewer people around us who do not have the Son of God, and hence do not have life.
Thank you, Jesus Christ, for giving your life for us and to us. Please grant us favour and blessing as we share your life with others, Amen.
