Today we meditate on 1 John, chapter 3, verse 1. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And so we are. The reason why the world does not know us, is that it did not know Him.
God has poured out His love on us, and adopted us as his children. This is a key message of scripture, isn’t it? We are not just forgiven our sins and then left as some kind of slave. No, we’re brought into relationship with God as his children. Our obedience towards him then is the obedience of children, not the obedience of slaves or employees or subordinates.
And he has adopted us because he loves us. And that’s the kind of relationship he wants with us.
Where does that leave us, then, with the world? It leaves us in a state of friction.
The world doesn’t know us, doesn’t accept us, doesn’t get where we’re coming from because the world doesn’t get where God is coming from. The world does not know God, doesn’t know God like we know Him, doesn’t know the truth of the Messiah who died for us, doesn’t know the truth of sin and the damage, the havoc it wreaks on creation and our lives.
What, then, should be our response? If we know that the world doesn’t know God, then surely one of the reasons we are here is to represent God to the world as best we are able with the Holy Spirit empowering us. We are to show the world what kind of God it is that we serve.
Not a God relating to us through an old covenant of judgment and sacrifice and bloodshed, no. A God relating to us through a new covenant of all debts being paid by the blood shed by Christ, so that we do not need to do that anymore.
So how will we show the world who God is? What will we do today, this week, this month, this year?
