The power that Jesus gave to his disciples remains available to the church today. With power comes great risk, that your head is turned by the power, that you get your priorities wrong, and that I think is why Jesus said this to his disciples in Luke chapter 10 verse 20. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you. But rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
Jesus is saying, yeah, I mean, it’s wonderful that the demons you’ve spoken to have been cast out and that people have been freed. But really your reason for celebration is that your eternal destiny is secure.
What are the things in my life, in your life, that cause us to celebrate? Is it success at work? Is it an increasing bank account? Is it greater influence in your community?
Jesus says all of these things may be cause to give you temporary happiness, but your true joy must come from knowing that you have been saved.
