Today we meditate on words from Jesus in John chapter 10 verse 7. So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep."

Now Christians make a big deal of saying that Jesus is the only way to God, and this can be offensive to people of other faiths. Why is it so important then that we recognise that Jesus is the only way?

It’s partly because of sin, isn’t it? We can’t be reconciled to God because of our sin. The Bible demonstrates, and I think our own experience demonstrates, that we can’t be good enough to attain the standard of a perfectly holy God. And so in Christianity, we have the only way being made for us to avoid having to attain that standard, which is impossible anyway.

Jesus makes the way. He becomes the door. We enter into relationship with him by believing in him. And then this miraculous thing happens that our sins are washed away by blood, by the perfect blood of the perfect sacrifice. So we then stand clean before God, despite anything that we’ve done before and anything that we’re going to do in future.

So we have to stand firm on this point. Jesus is the door, but anyone can go through that door. Salvation is truly for everyone if they are prepared to enter in and to bow the knee to him. And why would people not bow the knee to the true and living God who is worthy of our worship?

Thank you, Jesus, that you made a way, that you are the door for us, the sheep. Thank you that you welcome us in to your fold, to be in relationship with you and with your Father and with the Holy Spirit. Amen.
