Do you ever feel like you need more wisdom? I certainly do. So many decisions when I’m not really sure what’s best. The writer of Proverbs has a solution for us. It’s Proverbs chapter 2, verse 6. For the Lord gives wisdom. From his mouth, come knowledge and understanding.
Of course, we knew that the answer would be going to God and that the fear of the Lord is the start of wisdom. But taking this just a little further, we fear him, but then we seek the words that come from his mouth. Because knowing that, receiving those words, bring us to knowledge and understanding.
And we have two main sources of wisdom from God. One is the written word, and the other is the working of the Holy Spirit inside us, who guides our understanding, particularly as we interact with the Word of God.
So this is where we go first. We have lots of wise people to whom we can turn, especially Christians who are a little bit further in their journey than us, or Christians who have experience that we don’t yet have. But the writer of Proverbs would have us go first to God.
And that makes sense, doesn’t it? Because God knows absolutely everything. And certainly the Creator of this universe, someone who’s wise enough to do that, is going to know far more than us about anything.
Now, God doesn’t always give us the answers and the knowledge we want exactly when we want it, but James tells us that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask for it, without finding fault.
So let us make this our priority. When we need wisdom of any kind, about any situation, let us turn first to the Word of God and to prayer.
Thank you, Father, that you do generously share your wisdom with us. Thank you that you are willing and eager to educate us, to train us, to raise us up as sons and daughters who are growing in the knowledge of you and in wisdom. And so Lord, we turn once more to you for your words. Please fill us with your wisdom. Amen.
