Proverbs 29:25 says, The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
It’s really clear, isn’t it, that when we agree to submit to God’s authority, this provides for us a haven, a place of safety. Ultimately, we bow the knee to God. It is God’s way that must prevail over all others.
If we get ourselves into a state where we’re terrified of what people think of us, terrified of what people might do to us, that dramatically influences our effectiveness as Christians.
For a long time, in my late childhood and early teenage years, I lived in fear of what people would think of me if they found out that I was a Christian. And because of that, I was completely silenced. I repent of that. God, I know, has long since forgiven me for that silence. He forgave me before I was even born.
But still, I hope that I’ve learnt this lesson that we need not be fearful of men. We need not be fearful of those who can do nothing to our immortal soul.
