We can pray to God a lot in our lives, can’t we? All sorts of prayers. Prayers of gratitude, prayers of worship, prayers of petition, asking for things. But how often do we pray wise prayers?

Here is a wise prayer from Proverbs chapter 30, verse 8. Remove far from me falsehood and lying. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me.

I feel like we could meditate for two minutes on each of those three sections of this. Take away from me falsehood and lying. God, may I be spared that lying that affects me in my life from other people. May I have the wisdom to see through lies. But may I also not be tempted to lie myself.

And Lord, Please don’t give me poverty or riches. Now, how often do we say that we don’t want either of those? Because the wise man knows that riches can be as much of a snare as poverty can.

And then the final thing is, feed me with the food that is needful for me. Give me the food that I need, God. Not that I want, not that my greed is longing for. The food that I need. How often are we able to restrain ourselves to the food that we need, particularly if we have more than we need?

This is a very wise prayer, isn’t it? Take away lying and falsehood. Please keep me in a healthy middle ground between being poor and being rich. And please ensure that I am filled with the things that are needful for me, that are good for me, that you, my God, would set before me if you were preparing me a meal.

We can take a leaf out of the book of the writer of Proverbs, almost literally, by praying this prayer. And I recommend that at least once you adopt this as your prayer. And if you like, pray it with me now.

Lord God, please remove far from me falsehood and lying. Please give me neither poverty nor riches. And Lord God, please feed me with the food that is needful for me. Amen.
