This meditation goes live on the 1st of January. There is nothing magical about the changing of the year. But I think it’s a good opportunity to take stock and to decide afresh how we are going to conduct this year.

And that’s why today we’re focusing on Psalm chapter 7 verse 17. I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

I’m suggesting that we can start this year, that the first thing that we do, that we focus our attention on, is the gratitude that we owe God, and the worship of which he is worthy. Whether or not we are blessed with singing voices, that could sell out concerts. Nevertheless, God wants to hear us sing to Him songs of praise.

That’s repeated so much throughout Scripture. If we are able to lift our voices in praise to God, let us do that. If we feel self conscious doing it, let’s just do it in an environment where other people are singing louder than us, or the music, if we’re listening to a worship album, is louder than our voices. The point is that we are pouring out ourselves, sacrificially, to honour our God, our King, our Saviour, our Friend.

God is due so much gratitude. Firstly in this verse, it says, because He is righteous, He’s holy, He’s just and good. This is why we thank Him. We thank Him because of who He is, first. And then we thank Him because of what He’s done.

Will you today choose to make this year ahead, a year of thanks and worship, whatever it is that God asks of you, my friend? Will you thank him and praise him and glorify his name and be his servant? That would be an excellent decision to make. May God bless you throughout this year.
