Today we’re meditating on a question posed to us by the Apostle Peter. 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 11. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, What sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness?

We know, that God’s judgment is coming ultimately and that there will be some cataclysmic events taking place at the end of time as God settles all accounts and brings his final judgment on creation and on all who are in creation. We, who are in Christ, are completely safe from that judgment.

And this knowledge, Peter says, should have a big effect on how we conduct ourselves. We don’t just take our saved status for granted. This pushes us towards inviting the Holy Spirit to continue and accelerate his transforming work in our lives. Because our holiness and godliness, the holiness and godliness that’s given to us by God, through his working in our lives, that is a witness and a provocation to all around us. Our lives should be measurably different from those who are in the world and not of Christ.

To some, this will be repellent. But to those who are eager to seek God, it will inspire them to ask questions. And we must stand ready to provide those answers.

Let us, therefore, together, in the knowledge of what is to come, seek to live lives of holiness and godliness. And for that, we must ask for help from on high.

Holy Spirit, thank you that you are working in us, and that work continues until the day of Christ. Please transform us. Please make us more holy and more godly. We want to serve you. We want to be used by you. We want to see God’s purposes fulfilled in our lives and in this world. Thank you for your concern for us. Amen.
