I’ve been a Christian long enough to have gone to some conferences with some "big name" Christians who are preaching or prophesying or leading or serving in some way. And I understand that interest in going to see someone that we know to be under some kind of anointing.

But Jesus has a caution for us, in Luke chapter 9, verse 48: [Jesus] said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all, is the one who is great."

Now just imagine if, at a conference, instead of some "big name" Christian, it’s a child of seven or eight who gets up to the front, and brings us something from God. Would we go, "Ah!", and clap, and be condescending? Or would our spirits rejoice that this servant of God has brought us words from God?

Jesus is saying we shouldn’t look on the outward appearance. We shouldn’t consider credentials or background. We should look beyond that with discernment. to whether or not the person is from God. And so, receiving a child who’s come in the name of Christ is receiving Jesus, is receiving God, because the words come from God.

And in this way, Jesus turns upside down the common wisdom of society that wants status and prestige and authority. God doesn’t work that way. When His Spirit is living in any person, old or young, wise or foolish, that is all that is needed for the words of eternal life to come through that person from God Himself.

Father God, I ask that you give us that discernment, to know when the words that are coming to us, are coming from you. And that we won’t be swayed by what we see with our human eyes or what our own feeble wisdom tells us about the messenger and rather look for the signs of the Holy Spirit look for the signs of you.

And thank you God that your purposes can be fulfilled in everyone. Amen.
