Psalm 79 verse 9. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name. Deliver us and atone for our sins for your name’s sake.
What an excellent prayer that is for us as Christians. We do want God to deliver us, to deliver us from evil, often to deliver us from difficult circumstances, and bad relationships, and trauma and tragedy.
And also, we want God to have atoned for our sins, because we know it’s not possible for us to do that ourselves. There isn’t any price that we can pay that’s big enough to cover all our sins.
But amazingly, we can reflect back on this prayer in Psalm 79 and see how it’s been answered. The Psalmist knew that God was the God of his salvation, but how much more clearly do we see that now in the light of what Jesus did for us?
And the ultimate answer to prayer here is the atonement for our sins. No longer do we need to go down to the temple to bring our sheep or our pigeons and offer those up as a physical sacrifice. No, we don’t have to do any of that stuff, because Jesus did it once and for all.
So it’s still worth us praying this prayer. We still want God’s help. We still want his deliverance. And it’s still right that we ask him for those things, that we ask him to forgive us from our sins. But we also know with great clarity and assurance that those prayers have all been answered, that they find their ultimate answer in the person of Jesus Christ.
Would you then pray this prayer with me? Help us, O God, of our salvation. For the glory of your name, deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake. Amen.
