So here’s a verse that really goes against the grain: 2 Corinthians 11 verse 30. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

This is not the kind of boasting that we are used to, is it, that Paul’s suggesting should be a model for us? Why would we boast about things and areas in which we’re weak?

If you read through the Bible, you will see so many people in biblical history who were weak, who were flawed, who were cowards, who were adulterers, who were murderers. And these are the ones, these are the people that God uses.

So the boasting then is not about ourselves and how good we are, it’s about how God is glorified in our lives. In spite, maybe even because of our weaknesses. Because in our weakness, we have to submit to Him, we have to say, God, I don’t have strength for this. God, I can’t endure this. God, I can’t do this. I need your power. I need your help.

And so I, as I come even to do this, to create this meditation, have to say, Holy Spirit, please work in me because there’s nothing worthwhile in me unless you put it there first. I’m not good enough to do this, not even this.

It’s so contrary to modern thinking. It’s so contrary to the wisdom of the world.

The world tells us to tell each other that you’re a powerful man or a powerful woman. But no, Paul says, Let us say of ourselves, I’m a weak man, I’m a weak woman, but in my weakness God then is glorified. Definitely a challenge for today, isn’t it?

Lord God, I thank you that in your graciousness, in your mercy, in your glory, you choose to use us, weak and failed and flawed beings, your creatures, your children, those you’ve adopted. So in you God we boast, in your power. Please continue to work through our lives, but in such a way that the glory always goes to you. Amen.
