1 Peter chapter 1 verse 24. For all flesh is like grass. And all its glory like the flower of grass, the grass withers and the flower falls.

So, to state the obvious, when the grass grows, and we get the flower on the grass and these seeds, they just blow away, they’re mown down, they’re here today, gone tomorrow. We aren’t around for long, not on this earth. Our influence is limited. Our so called glory isn’t that amazing.

He would rather that we look to the Word of God, which he mentions in the next verse. But this verse is all about us and our limitations.

And it’s not bad to reflect on our limitations sometimes. We are limited in time, we are limited in capacity, we are limited in our abilities, we are limited in our thinking, but there is One who surpasses all of that and who accepts us as we are. His name is God Almighty.

And so although Peter has given us some sobering words to meditate on, at least we can also think about the other things that we know. That even though we are temporary in this life, even though we’re not around for long, we have an eternal future to look forward to.

And even though our glory is so limited, that doesn’t matter, because we will be radiating the glory of God. We are being transformed into His likeness. And when we see Him face to face, His glory shining on us will be reflected. Still, Peter wants us to remain humble, knowing that anything that we have which is of value is only of value because it came from God.

Lord God, you’re not belittling us. You’re just telling us who we are so that we don’t get grand ideas, that we put ourselves in the place of God where you should be. No, we look to you, God. You are glorious. You are eternal. You are unfailing. And we only have any glory, any hope of a future, any capability, because of you, and what you’ve done for us, and what you’ve put in us. We thank you. Amen.
