Transcript
Today’s Advent meditation follows on directly from yesterday’s when God was speaking through Moses about the true Prophet who is going to come and speak to all of us. This is then from Deuteronomy chapter 18 verse 19. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.
So we accept, don’t we, that God is the Supreme Being. He is the highest authority that we can possibly have. Anything that God insists upon is going to happen, is going to be done.
And God says about Jesus, when Jesus comes, he’s going to speak, and God himself will require people to listen to Jesus. Now we’re seeing today that many people choose not to listen to Jesus, so what does it mean for us, this verse?
Ultimately, we know at the end of time, every knee will have to bow before God. However He treats those who have rejected Him, He is insisting that everyone listen to His Son. His Son who is Ruler and Judge. God Himself validates Jesus the Messiah, the coming King.
It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it, what it might have been like for Moses to hear this himself when he knew that Israelites struggled to listen to him. God reassures him. He says, this new greatest Prophet will be listened to by all one way or another, and God’s will will be done.
Thank you God, that in your graciousness you give us many opportunities to turn to you. Thank you for the words that you spoke through Jesus, that you are continuing to speak to us through your Holy Spirit. Lord God, please help us to listen and please help us to extend your message beyond our four walls, beyond our congregations, into our communities, into our friends and family, so that during this time of Advent, where we remember the coming of Jesus, everyone will have that opportunity to hear his words. Amen.
