The Bible talks a lot about light and so of course we meditate on it from time to time on this channel. But here at the time of Advent we are meditating on a particular light, the one that’s spoken of in John chapter 1 verse 9. The true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

John has this particular revelation of Jesus Christ as the bringer of light. Jesus entered the world so that he could take people out of darkness. But he was taking them out of darkness by showing his light to those people.

Not everybody would receive that light, not everybody wanted it. Plenty of people wished to remain in darkness, hidden from his light. But this true light, the light of Christ, is, John says, for everyone. And he came into the world to shed that light to all of us when he was incarnated as the baby.

And then we see in the ministry and the witness of Jesus Christ how he brings that light, knowledge, understanding about the kingdom of God, an appreciation of the difference between true righteousness and false self righteousness. A route to please God so that we can live lives of light ourselves.

This is one reason why Christmas is celebrated so much with lights. We need light to see. We need light to see everything. When God shines his light on everything for us, we see everything in a new light. With refreshed eyes and a clearer understanding. This is why we must meditate at Advent, as at any other time, so that we can truly appreciate the light of Jesus.
