During Advent, we often think about the manner of the arrival of Jesus, and today we’re meditating on Luke chapter 1 verse 35. And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God."
And so we see for the second time in the Bible, the Holy Spirit brooding over something to bring forth an incredible creative act. The Holy Spirit back in Genesis was brooding over the chaos and then emerges all creation. But now, in Luke, we’ve got the Holy Spirit brooding over Mary and then comes forth Jesus Christ.
These are two outstanding acts of God where he interacts with the physical realm, in order to create something of particular significance. First creation, and then the incarnated God, Messiah Jesus.
And so, how is it possible that Jesus could be so holy? Well, how could he not be holy when these are the circumstances of his birth? The holiness of the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, and she conceived, and she gave birth to the Holy Son of God, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus.
I can’t hold all of this inside my head. It really blows my mind. I don’t even fully understand what the holiness of Jesus, what the holiness of God, what the holiness of the Holy Spirit is like. It’s not like our holiness. It’s many levels beyond that.
And this is the child we are called to remember, and we are called to serve, who grew up to become a man, who was both God and man, and then who gave up everything for us, so that we could somehow enter into His holiness.
Remarkable, don’t you think?
