Today’s Advent Meditation is from the second book of Samuel, chapter 7, verses 12 to 13. And this is what the prophet Nathan is going to say to King David. When your days are fulfilled, and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Many people think about what legacy they might leave after their time on this earth is done. And for King David, one of the greatest legacies he could give was to have an enduring, kind, good kingship.
And this is what God says to him. Your time will come to an end, but after that, your kingship will last forever.
And there was only one way that this could come about, a supernatural way, because the natural kingship appears on this earth to have died out. But, we know that the Messiah came from the line of David. This is proven to us in the Gospels and Jesus is referred to in the Gospels as the King of the Jews. And now he’s my king too, me as a Gentile.
His kingdom has been established, the kingdom of David, now presided over by King Jesus. And, as promised in this prophecy, the throne of his kingdom will endure forever for the rest of eternity.
Could David have imagined absolute eternity for his legacy? I’m not sure, but that is what God promised and that is what God fulfils in our Messiah Jesus.
Thank you God for your plan, your purposes, and your promise. Thank you that we have now a King, our Christ, our Lord Jesus. And thank you for reminding us of all this, your prophecies and their fulfilment at this time of Advent. These are memories and hopes for us to cherish in our hearts until we see you. Amen.
